Alsis Omni: walking inside the digital twin to train, teach and rehabilitate

With the University of Salamanca we researched a digital twin that combines a motion platform, sensors and cameras with virtual reality. The person really walks without leaving the spot and the system records how they move. Today it is Alsis Omni.

  1. 01 · The challenge

Training real situations without simulating them physically

Practising a task, a route or an exercise in the real world requires space, supervision and, sometimes, taking risks. Physical simulations are expensive and can be dangerous.

Virtual reality headsets provide the situation, but the person doesn’t move as they would in reality: they teleport instead of walking.

  2. 02 · The solution

A digital twin you can walk through

We combined a virtual reality headset with an omnidirectional platform that detects movement. The person walks naturally inside the virtual scene without leaving the spot.

The R&D project had two goals:

    • To research a digital twin system that combines a physical platform with motion sensors and cameras, virtual reality devices and an immersive augmented reality environment, to help people train, simulate, learn or rehabilitate.
    • To develop a prototype augmented reality platform with that digital twin for a specific use case: the neurorehabilitation of people with neurological disorders or nervous system injuries.
  3. 03 · The result

    Alsis Omni

The project gave rise to Alsis Omni, the virtual reality platform with natural walking:

    • In industry, operators train inside their machine’s digital twin.
    • In healthcare, the Move and Cognitive modules work on gait, balance, attention and memory.
    • Every session is recorded: path, times and hits.
